Sheriff: 1 dead after tornado hits Wisconsin trailer park

Firefighters work the site of the damage after a tornado ripped through Prairie Lake Estates trailer home park just north of Chetek Wis. Tuesday

One person, identified by Fitzgerald as being a 46-year-old man, died at the mobile home park. However, Fire Chaplain Danny Ringer said that one person died because of the twister.

The National Weather Service says its preliminary damage rating for the tornado that destroyed the trailer park was a strong EF2. It was not immediately known if there were injuries.

The 30 or so tornado reports were scattered from Texas to Wisconsin on Tuesday.

In addition to the threat for violent tornadoes, damaging winds gusts to 70 miles per hour, large hail and torrential downpours will be the most widespread impacts.

At least two people were killed and dozens of others injured Tuesday after tornadoes tore through a mobile home park in Wisconsin and a subdivision in Oklahoma. This is unconfirmed and we are waiting for the National Weather Service to confirm this. The Barron County Sheriff's Department along with all local area law enforcement agencies in Barron County and 12 area ambulances and 6 area fire departments responded to the scene. The mobile home park contained 50-60 trailers and several of them are totally destroyed.

At noon Wednesday, some residents were allowed back into the trailer park, officials with Wisconsin Emergency Operations Center said. "I've seen others where it's done bits and pieces, but nothing like this where you have that many individuals and families affected", said Walker.

Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald, in a statement he gave to the Leader-Telegram of Eau Claire, called the devastation caused by the tornado that touched down at the trailer park "a mess".

At least one child is among the injured. The high winds during a tornado can rip a mobile home, which frequently would not have a foundation, from its moorings.

Fallin's office says the governor will arrive in Elk City about noon Wednesday to meet with emergency responders and tour the damaged area.

The sheriff told KARE 11's Jay Olstad in a text Tuesday night that there were still people "unaccounted" for, and that they will continue searching in the morning "if people are not located".

The tornadoes were part of a system of severe storms that rolled through the northern Chippewa Valley on Tuesday evening.

There were 58 trailer lots in the park, and as many as eight trailers in a north lot escaped major damage, Fitzgerald said.

More severe weather is expected in parts of the Midwest a day after tornadoes killed two people and destroyed dozens of homes in Oklahoma and Wisconsin. One person was killed and about 25 were injured. Tornado watches and severe thunderstorm watches were issued for Clark, Dunn, Eau Claire, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, St. Croix and Taylor counties in west-central Wisconsin, and a flash flood warning for Buffalo, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Pepin, Pierce, Rusk and Trempealeau counties.

The National Weather Service (NWS) said the storm started late Tuesday afternoon in Wisconsin into the evening, then tracked into the panhandle of Oklahoma and before heading to Kansas.
