Mercedes driver Hamilton led every lap at Shanghai, but once Vettel made his way past the cars that jumped him early in the race due to his pitstop under virtual safety auto conditions, the two engaged in a battle of lap times as Hamilton tried to keep the Ferrari driver at bay. Sebastian Vettel battled past his teammate to take second place, whilst Red Bull were having their own inter-team battle.
Hamilton, who now shares a lead with Vettel at the summit of the Drivers' Championship admitted post-race things might have been different had it not been for the stoppage.
The triple world champion and the teenaged Red Bull driver engaged in some light-hearted banter on the podium, withHamilton, while summing up the race, hesitating mid-sentence and seemingly forgetting Verstappen's name before calling him "this young guy here".
"The race victor deserves to win, Lewis did the best job", he said. No other driver has won the Grand Prix more than two times, with Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg both reaching the chequered flag first, twice.

A wet track caused havoc early on with the virtual safety vehicle deployed on lap one after Lance Stroll spun off in his Williams. I tried to chase Lewis down as much as possible but I had the feeling that every time I put a lap in he was able to respond.
"But later on Sebastian got behind me and we had a real race on our hands", Hamilton said.
