Lewis Hamilton Wins Chinese Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel Finishes Second

Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain celebrates on the podium after winning the Chinese Grand Prix at the Shanghai International Circuit, April 9, 2017.

Mercedes driver Hamilton led every lap at Shanghai, but once Vettel made his way past the cars that jumped him early in the race due to his pitstop under virtual safety auto conditions, the two engaged in a battle of lap times as Hamilton tried to keep the Ferrari driver at bay. Sebastian Vettel battled past his teammate to take second place, whilst Red Bull were having their own inter-team battle.

Hamilton, who now shares a lead with Vettel at the summit of the Drivers' Championship admitted post-race things might have been different had it not been for the stoppage.

The triple world champion and the teenaged Red Bull driver engaged in some light-hearted banter on the podium, withHamilton, while summing up the race, hesitating mid-sentence and seemingly forgetting Verstappen's name before calling him "this young guy here".

"The race victor deserves to win, Lewis did the best job", he said. No other driver has won the Grand Prix more than two times, with Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg both reaching the chequered flag first, twice.

"It is going to be one of the closest if not the closest [title race] I have ever experienced", said Hamilton.

"The scenario I'm in right now, I'm up fighting against a four-time world champion who is at his best and he is phenomenally quick", said Hamilton.

In the first of back-to-back Grand Prix weekends, the third race of the season will take place in Bahrain next weekend. "I think we were a bit unlucky". The 32-year-old has added that he is enjoying what appears to be a close title battle with the Ferrari driver, who has made best use of new regulations that demanded faster and meaner cars in the new season. Today we finished second, very happy with that, we take it, good points. A short time later later, on the fourth lap, Antonio Giovinazzi hit a wet patch and slammed into the wall, severely damaging his Sauber auto and bringing the race to a halt again. We were a good match. "They've had a very, very strong run the last couple of years".

Speaking on the intercom to his pit crew just as the race concluded, Hamilton promised to keep the momentum going forward.

Some of his drives - such as his thrilling display of bravery and skill at a drenched Interlagos previous year - have even drawn comparisons with greats Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.

"The safety vehicle came just when I was about to start to feel that the dry tyre was a lot quicker, Vettel said".

A wet track caused havoc early on with the virtual safety vehicle deployed on lap one after Lance Stroll spun off in his Williams. I tried to chase Lewis down as much as possible but I had the feeling that every time I put a lap in he was able to respond.

"But later on Sebastian got behind me and we had a real race on our hands", Hamilton said.
