Federer's remarkable form continues with Miami Open title

Federer was awesome against Nadal. He owns 91 career titles. Nadal kept charging, but Federer played over his head when it mattered most.

Federer continued his outstanding start to the year 2017 and beat Nadal 6-3, 6-4 in straight sets to claim the Miami Open title.

The victory marked his third Key Biscayne crown, following his previous triumphs in 2005 and 2006. "He was playing big tennis, stepping in doing all the right things..." He only converted two of nine break points, but that's all he needed as he saved all four he faced against his own serve, all in the first half of the first set.

"Part of the situation was that my knee was really odd on the clay previous year, so maybe being away from the clay as much as possible is maybe is a good thing as well, even though I don't think it was because of the clay as such".

Federer broke Nadal's serve in the eighth game of the first set and again in the ninth of the second to beat him for the third time in as many meetings this year.

Nadal, who is up to fifth in the ATP rankings and trails only Federer in the year's Race to London rankings, seemed positive with his display despite the defeat, pointing to huge improvements from the match in Indian Wells. It was a good start to the season, playing already in three finals. "I'm not 24 anymore", Federer told ESPN.

He said: "Congratulations to Roger and all his team for an awesome start to the season". "It was more of a fight mode I was in today trying to stay afloat. I gonna keep trying hard for the next couple of years".

At 35, Federer is playing some of the best tennis of his career - so good he's even dominating his longtime nemesis.

This is Roger Federer's third title out of four tournaments this season.

He apparently made the call in victory, telling U.S. television: "I probably won't play any clay events except the French Open, my body needs healing".

"That is why this break coming now in the clay court season and focusing everything now on the French, the grass and then the hard courts after that is going to be the key for me".

"I don't know", the 14-time Grand Slam champion said when asked about his main rival for the title at Roland Garros.

"At the end of the day I need to look after my health and all parts of my life".

Although Nadal still enjoys the superior head-to-head between the pair dating back to their first encounter in Miami in 2004, Federer now has a 10-9 lead on hard courts.

The 37th edition of the iconic rivalry returned to where it all began.

The match was played in the sweltering midday heat, and there was some question whether Federer would have enough energy to keep up with the 30-year-old Nadal after the electrifying, gruelling semifinal Federer played against Nick Kyrgios Friday night.

The Spaniard has reached three deciders in 2017 but lost on each occasion, including going down 6-3 6-4 to Federer on Sunday.

Though the first six games of the second set went with serve, Federer always held more comfortably.

Striking with conviction, Nadal dotted the sideline with a 110 miles per hour ace holding in his opening game.

"Congratulations to you too Rafa on your great comeback to the tour", Federer said after the match.
