Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross SUV

"Eclipse is a word used to describe an astronomical event", the Japanese automaker continued.

Mitsubishi acknowledges its earlier use of the Eclipse name on a North American market coupe sold from 1989 until 2011, adding the "Cross" designation seemingly to spare any confusion between the two. Hoping to capitalize on consumers' fond memories of their salad days, it's reviving the Eclipse moniker, this time applied to a crossover, with the name "Eclipse Cross".

The vehicle will feature a high-saturation red body color meant to evoke the brilliance of the sun's halo flaring from behind the moon.

No further details of the Eclipse Cross have yet been released, though from the teaser photos it can be determined that the newcomer will be a much more stylish, crossover-type auto than the brand's typical SUV product.

The upcoming compact SUV will be named the "Eclipse Cross" as a nod to the Eclipse sport coupe ("Cross" is simply short for "crossover"). On the road, the Eclipse Cross will emanate a sharp and active appearance.

The new compact SUV will be added to MMC's crossover SUV line-up which now comprises the ASX compact SUV, and the Outlander and Outlander PHEV midsize SUVs.

It's believed that the new Eclipse Cross SUV will take some inspiration from the Mitsubishi XR-PHEV concept, which was previously shown at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. It is also expected to rival Nissan's own compact crossover, the Qashqai.
