France defeat Scotland to kick-start their Six Nations

Townsend will take over from Vern Cotter in June when the New Zealander's contract expires

Scotland has not beaten France in France since 1999 but will be in the rare position of favourite when they meet at Stade de France on Sunday in the Six Nations.

Scotland impressively outscored the French in tries with Stuart Hogg and Tim Swinson both crossing the line.

Cotter also stopped short of criticising Finn Russell, who inexplicably missed a routine conversion from under the posts which would have handed Scotland a five-point advantage - they led 16-13 at the time.

Scotland have never won an RBS Six Nations Championship match in Paris but, having broken their opening-match hoodoo after 11 years' of trying, he says they are determined to crack another.

He said: "It was tough going out there, France have a massive physical pack but we chucked it away in the end I think".

"Some of our play didn't link well, we'll have to look at it".

"But, we didn't look after the ball, we didn't respect it enough and ultimately that has cost us".

"But in those previous games, they probably were still fighting against the way management wanted them to play, but now that they've been given this license and they're confident in what they do, we need to be really disciplined".

"We'll have to match their ferocity while ensuring we take that - and all the other battles we can expect in this game - on our terms, whether that's in collisions, in set-piece, at the breakdown or in the air".

"A win against them is hugely important because we now know we can compete with the very best, which is something we believed anyway but needed to prove". Replacement Ali Price gave away a penalty just two minutes after coming on, but Lopez couldn't convert, nailing the post. "Last week we lost to England in the final 15 minutes and I'm delighted to win this game in the final 10 minutes". The Scots forced a turnover of their own after a penalty and Sean Maitland made plenty of ground, before Les Bleus hit back again and Huw Jones almost came away with an interception. By trade Swinson is a second row but his support line for his try, just a couple of minutes later, was textbook.

Cyril Baille put in a tremendous shift, however, denying the visitors the first try of the match. We couldn't get rhythm into our attack.

"It's all about putting our hands up and saying what went wrong", Scotland lock Jonny Gray said.

"It was a great result (against Ireland) and we'll take the benefits from it". Noves has yet to find a way to make his side clinical in the way England was last weekend, beating France with a late try despite being second best for long spells.
