Braves, Reds Talking Brandon Phillips Trade

Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Reds will receive Andrew McKirahan and Carlos Portuondo from the Braves in the Brandon Phillips trade. Bowden also reported that Phillips has passed his physical and that the deal is simply awaiting the green light from Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred since the Reds will be covering most of Phillips' $14 million salary for 2017. Phillips will be manning the keystone for a team other than the Reds for the first time in over a decade. That led the two teams to rekindle trade talks involving Phillips, with a deal expected to be culminated on Sunday.

The Braves, though, were in need of a second baseman after presumed starter Sean Rodriguez injured his shoulder in a auto accident last week.

While he will add some punch to the Braves lineup, Phillips is at his best in the field as a four-time Gold Glove victor. Rodriguez and his family were involved in a serious auto accident January 30. The other driver, who had stolen a police cruiser and t-boned into the Rodriguez family's auto, perished. He was tabbed to start at second base full time in Atlanta. Even so, it's a surprising reversal given that Phillips, a Georgia native who owns a home in Atlanta, had previously blocked a deal to the Braves in November, one of several he has scuttled over the years. Phillips has averaged a.279 batting average and more than 13 home runs per season over the past five years, speaking to the power and hit tool he brings to the table. Phillips, who is in the final year of his contract, had 10-and-5 rights and could block any trade.

Phillips has been Cincinnati's starting second baseman since 2006. New reports suggest that they are much more serious.

The deal has yet to be finalized and it is unclear what the Braves will part with in order to get Phillips.

The Braves finished the 2016 season 68-93, last in the division. Before, the Cuban had played for Santiago de Cuba in the Cuban National Series.

Portuondo, 29, was signed by the Braves in February 2016 as an worldwide free agent from Cuba, where he made 44 starts and 81 relief appearances for Santiago in Cuba Serie Nacional. He'll make 14 million this upcoming season. He too will be an option for the Reds' bullpen in 2017.
