Chicago aquarium euthanizes more than 90-year-old lungfish

Chicago's Shedd Aquarium has announced the passing of their oldest-living resident an Australian lungfish named Granddad

The world's oldest aquarium fish has died, according to officials from the animal's former home at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium.

Shedd Aquarium acquired the lungfish in 1933 from the Sydney Aquarium in Australia.

Known to "love his leafy greens" and have a penchant for "Earthworm Wednesdays", Granddad is the longest-lived of any fish in a zoological setting in the world, according to the aquarium. The Shedd couldn't say exactly how old Grandad was at the time of his death but added that he was probably in his mid-90s.

In the post, it stated that Granddad was humanely euthanized on Sunday "due to a rapid decline in quality of life associated with old age".

The storied fish was also recognized for his diplomatic accomplishments. Through the decades, Granddad has charmed and amused roughly 104 million visitors, according to Shedd Aquarium.

One Facebook user wrote a remembrance of Granddad, describing a role that the fish had in his wedding. "During his almost two-year hiatus in a reserve area, staff members repeatedly assured anxious aquarium members and other guests that their favorite lungfish was doing fine and would be back on view in a spacious new habitat recreating a Queensland riverbank ecosystem". Sattler, who has provided care for Granddad for more than 15 years, said he will be missed.

"Granddad outlived several generations of caregivers, and some current staff members never imagined that they'd see him gone during their careers". But if you haven't been to the Shedd in a while, check out these photos of the aquarium's favorite fish.

Granddad, a male Australian lungfish that first arrived at the facility in 1933, had to be euthanized on February 5, after an exam revealed his internal organs were failing.
