Ecclestone replaced as Formula One boss

LONDON, Jan 23 (Reuters) - Bernie Ecclestone's 40-year reign as Formula One's commercial supremo ended on Monday with the sport's new owners Liberty Media replacing the 86-year-old Briton with American Chase Carey. "I am simply gone. My position has been taken by Chase Carey", he said. "A kind of honorary president", he said. Chase Carey, formerly the president of 21st Century Fox, was named early in the takeover bid as the operation's chairman. "I have this title now, even though I don't know what it means".

"I'd like to thank Bernie Ecclestone, who becomes chairman emeritus, for his tremendous success in building this remarkable global sport".

"My days in the office will be getting quieter now", he admitted.

Following Ecclestone's high-profile departure, attention will further intensify on F1's soon to be owners as they appear in favour of a contrasting operating structure to which the sport is accustomed. Maybe I will attend a Grand Prix sometime in the future. And I have enough money to me to visit a race to afford to.

The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) as the Formula 1's governing body informed about the upcoming changes. Ecclestone said he doubted he would continue on the board of the FIA, saying he'd have to talk to Jean Todt. It is understood that Liberty Media wants to divide Ecclestone's former responsibilities among multiple people, with Auto Motor und Sport reporting that ex-Ferrari and Mercedes head Ross Brawn is still in the picture to fill one of those roles.
