Deadline extended to sign up for Jan. 1 Obamacare coverage

The federal exchange handles sign-ups for 39 states. Kevin Counihan, chief executive of the ACA's Health Insurance Marketplace within the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, attributed the decision to "extraordinary volume of consumers" contacting call centers or visiting, the website for the federal insurance exchange.

Citing "extraordinary consumer demand" to enroll Thursday in health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has extended the deadline to Monday to enroll and still have coverage beginning January 1.

"Hundreds of thousands have already selected plans over the last few days, and almost a million of you have left contact information to hold your place in line", health officials said.

The deadline to enroll through the federal exchange is now 11:59 p m. PST time on Monday.

Millions of Americans have already signed up for 2017 coverage, according to DHHS, but it isn't too late should people still want to get covered by the federal program known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. NY officials have not said what it would do with the state-run exchange. And almost a million people left contact information to hold their place in line while trying to sign up, according to Kevin Counihan, CEO of the Health Insurance Marketplace.

The announcement Friday afternoon by Obama at his final year-end White House press conference comes despite vows by the incoming Republican-controlled Congress and President-Elect Donald Trump to repeal the ACA.

The registration for the ACA is via's Open Enrollment, which has been available since November 1.
