BAMTech paying $300M for 'League of Legends' e-sports rights

This deal initially came to light when Turner Esports Contributing Editor Richard Lewis reported on a leaked document in November about the BAMTech and Riot Games deal.

While BAMTech will reportedly handle the streaming of League of Legends competitions, as well as advertising and sponsorship, and intend to create a mobile app for viewers to watch via, games will continue to be streamed on Twitch as they have been in the past.

Major League Baseball's technology services company BAMTech signed an exclusive streaming rights deal with gaming publisher Riot Games for a minimum of $300 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. Bowman pointed out that the amount of time registered through official League of Legends streaming channels is greater than any other sport in the world.

The new deal gives BAMTech the exclusive rights to stream and monetize League of Legends through 2023.

"This is a game changer for our sport". "We want our sport to be funded by itself and we think this deal is going to help us get there". In BAMTech, we have found a partner equally committed to building professional League of Legends towards the lasting future we believe in for teams, players and fans. Banking on earnings generated by advertisements and sponsorships, BAMTech and Riot together seek to take their financial success several steps further. "We're honored by their faith and belief in our sport".

"We deliberately designed our events, on the other hand, to be inclusive experience for all of our fans, even our World Championship", Riot Vice President of E-Sports Dustin Beck said at the 2016 Game Developers Conference.

BAMTech is a subsidiary of MLB Advanced Media which functions as an online interactive unit for 30 Major League Baseball club owners. While the deal appears to be about streaming, rather than broadcasting, ESPN is owned by Disney.
