Samsung Recall Raises Questions About Consumer Watchdog

It will be interesting to see whether the $100 incentive will be enough to make mourning Galaxy Note7 want to remain in the Samsung camp. Last year's Galaxy Note 5 is also still for sale from many carriers and retailers, and while it's a step down in many ways, it still has the same size screen and S Pen support. "But Samsung still has to convince many people that the Note 7's problems were isolated to that model".

It's well past time to return your Note 7.

U.S. customers have been advised to use the U.S. Postal Service, which is only transporting the gadgets via ground transportation, and UPS shipping services to send back their device.

There have been 20 cases of Galaxy Note 7 phones catching fire or overheating on the mainland, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement Tuesday.

The CPSC and Samsung are pushing for a 100 percent response rate to the recall, which has proven "a real challenge for Samsung", Elliot Kaye, chairman of the CPSC, said in a statement.

In other words, about 40 percent of all Note 7 users haven't heeded Samsung's plea to immediately power down the phone. While one handset exploded inside a USA flight, another phone caught fire even when the customer has just kept it on a table.

While the Note 7 is off the market for good, I suspect Samsung will continue to investigate the possible causes of the exploding phones, because the company's image has also taken a bit of a hit.

The larger recall program now applies to both original and replacement units that were sold or exchanged in the United States.

Koh Dong-jin stated that he "would at any cost find the exact cause (of the faulty Galaxy Note 7) to restore trust of consumers so that they can use Samsung products without any safety concerns", according to Korea Herald. While the actual scale is something we can only guess at for now, experts are putting damages in tens of billions - a huge loss, even for a company of Samsung's stature.
