Gorilla escapes enclosure at London Zoo

An investigation has been launched into the "minor incident", they added. It was our 18-year-old gorilla Kumbuka and he was tranquilized by vets and returned to his pen. "The gorilla did not get out of the safe space, there were only about 100 visitors".

A "PSYCHO" gorilla on the loose at London Zoo has been captured after being shot with a tranquilliser dart. "Huddling in a building at the London Zoo after staff told us to get into a building quickly".

London Zoo said Kumbuka is now 'awake and well'.

Neuropsychologist Dr Jonathan Mall was at the Weird and Wonderful World of Field market research conference when the incident happened.

A gorilla ignited a major panic at London Zoo after breaking out of its enclosure.

"We were in there for about half an hour to 45 minutes".

It looks like people have since been allowed to leave the zoo, and BBC News journalist Robert Rea's colleague was told that the incident was over.

As we were waiting we saw police turn up with lots of guns.

In 2007, a 400-pound gorilla escaped from an enclosure and ran amok at a Rotterdam zoo in the Netherlands, biting one woman and dragging her around before he was finally subdued.

A police spokesman told the Evening Standard officers have been sent "to support zoo staff dealing with the gorilla in question".

"We've been slowly introducing (Kumbuka) to our three females, and Mjukuu and Effie are already quite smitten with their handsome new roommate", zookeeper Daniel Simmonds told the Daily Mail.

"And then we started to leave and we heard the siren go off".

The zoo in Regent's Park has the Gorilla Kingdom attraction which it said "brings the African rainforest to the heart of London".

Officials are yet to comment on how the animal managed to escape its enclosure.

Eyewitnesses said Kumbuka banged on the walls of his enclosure before he got out.

The incident comes just months after a gorilla named Harambe was shot dead by staff at Cincinnati Zoo after a child fell into its enclosure.
