BlackBerry Launches DTEK50 Smartphone With Emphasis On Security

The new Android smartphone from the once glorious company is now available for pre-orders in Italy, Germany, Spain, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the United States until August 8 afternoon. This is crucial because without mass adoption it will be hard for BlackBerry to perpetuate its devices business. He has said he plans to make the money-losing hardware business profitable by September. It ships with BlackBerry's now-signature software features, many of which debuted alongside the Priv last November.

As you can see, this will not mean an very bad lot to the average consumer (nor to us in some instances) but if you're here then you're interested in the phone, so you should rest assured that BlackBerry will be doing everything it can to avoid privacy concerns and security breaches from malicious sources.

In a recent survey of Android smartphone users, BlackBerry found that 50 per cent believe their smartphone is only somewhat secure, and what's more, despite data security fears, one in six Android users don't know about Android security patches.

The BlackBerry Priv has a slightly larger display at 5.4-inches and it also offers double the resolution at 2560 x 1440 pixels for a pixel density of 540ppi.

The new product is also BlackBerry's thinnest and has an on-screen keyboard - not its traditional keyboard. That could be a big winning point for the company given that there aren't many companies offering smartphones with keyboards.

The phone runs Google's Android 6.0 operating system, but it also has a series of BlackBerry-specific features including communications and security apps, pop-up widgets, a unified search utility, and gesture controls.

The name of the device isn't official just yet, and there appears to be some back and forth on what it'll be called once BlackBerry announces it. No price or release date are known, either.

The BlackBerry DTEK50 will cost £275 in the UK.

Sales of BB10 devices have been depressed by incompatibility with popular apps. The company trimmed the Priv's price in April. It's compatible with T-Mobile and AT&T on the USA, and it comes bundled with an external battery pack. In the USA the handset will be available from Inc., Best Buy Co. and B&H Foto & Electronics Corp.
