Authorities: Kansas officer's shooting death not an ambush

Within five minutes, officers - including the police captain - arrived on the scene and found several people immediately jumping out of a vehicle and fleeing from the scene. "Our blue line got a little thinner yesterday with the loss of Capt. Melton", Zeigler said.

Mayor Mark Holland also said it doesn't appear that Melton's death "was a planned ambush against police" and that the death is "another example of another criminal trying to escape arrest". "Thank you for your continued support". The shooting also comes as police departments across the country are on edge after ambush attacks left eight officers dead in Texas and Louisiana. "When they leave home, the family expects them to return".

While the attack isn't part of the recent string of shootings of police in the U.S., Zeigler said the hate against police must stop.

Ziegler went on to describe Melton as a "lovable guy" who as well respected throughout the community and with fellow officers.

"This crime does not fit the national narrative of planned attacks on law enforcement", Kansas City Police Chief Terry Zeigler said, according to the Kansas City Star.

Zeigler said at Wednesday's press conference that authorities believe they had taken everyone who was involved in the incident into custody, but asked members of the community to call with tips if they had information to share.

Capt. Robert Melton was fatally shot Tuesday while searching for a drive-by shooting suspect. Two suspects are in custody.

During a news conference at the hospital where the officer succumbed to his wounds, Kansas City Police Chief Terry Ziegler said it happened around 2 p.m. on 1st Street, when the officer was responding to a drive-by shooting and auto chase.

A police detective in this Kansas City - which is much smaller than neighboring Kansas City, Missouri, - was fatally shot in May by a man police said was carjacking vehicles and had shot a driver. Brad Lancaster, who was killed in May.

Police are investigating a shooting that happened just a mile away from where they were gathered to remember a fallen officer on Wednesday night.
