'Ghostbusters' holds its own, but 'Life of Pets still No. 1

The Secret Life of Pets marched neatly past the $200 million mark this weekend, adding $50 million and holding on to number one.

Paul Feig's "Ghostbusters" reboot has triggered intense debate over its decision to refashion the proton pack-wielding paranormal investigators as an all-female team.

"Pets" should more than make up the difference on Saturday and Sunday. That is a heck of a lot more than most comedies cost to produce.

"Ghostbusters" also has to overcome the perception - particularly among male fans - that it would not measure up to the 1984 original.

For the fifth straight weekend in a row an animated movie held the number one spot, leaving one of the most talked about remakes to settle for a solid second place.

"Unless it has massive legs, any opening under $50 million is not a triumph", said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. Sony noted that it represented the biggest live-action opening since Fox's "X-Men: Apocalypse" two months ago and the second-highest live-action non-superhero film of the year behind Disney's "The Jungle Book". Those wanting to know just how well Ghostbusters is doing will find out over the next couple of weeks. With an estimated budget of around $145 million, plus a $100 million prints and advertising price tag, just making around $46 million on its opening weekend doesn't cut it. Especially with the movie not being allowed to play in China, which has been a saviour for the global box office of numerous movies this summer. For the second straight week, the animated movie took down all comers, including Ghostbusters.

The weekend's other wide release debut, Broad Green's "The Infiltrator", debuted Wednesday across 1,601 theaters, taking in a tepid $6.7 million in its first five days of release.

While Sony wants its new film to spawn a brand new franchise, it's a safe bet the Secret Life of Pets is well on its way to doing the same. "At least people are talking about the movies, and sometimes that's a victory in itself".
