Over 29 Palestinians injured in clashes by Israeli Forces

The occupied Palestinian territories have been the scene of heightened tensions since August 2015, when Israel imposed restrictions on the entry of Palestinian worshipers into the al-Aqsa Mosque.

"I encourage you to take the courageous steps necessary to prevent a one-state reality of perpetual conflict that is incompatible with realizing the national aspirations of Israeli and Palestinian people", Ban said, speaking in Jerusalem alongside Netanyahu.

The move aimed at soothing newly erupted clashes at the site between Palestinian youths and Israeli forces, Xinhua news agency reported.

She added that "despite the decision" police had made to close the compound until the end of Ramadan, "masked young Muslim men hurled stones and other objects" at the Moroccan Gate entrance to Al-Aqsa, lightly injuring a woman who was at the neighboring Western Wall.

Israeli police spokesperson Luba al-Samri said in a statement that during a "special meeting" Tuesday morning, Israeli police chose to close the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound to foreign and non-Muslim worshipers on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, adding that as usual, it will be closed to visitors on Fridays and Saturdays.

Islamic officials accused Israeli authorities of breaking a tacit agreement on non-Muslim access to the site during the last 10 days of Ramadan.

A police spokesman questioned by AFP said he was not aware of officers using force.

The 10 days, which began on Sunday, are the most solemn for Muslims and the period attracts the highest number of worshipers to the site.

Calm later returned to the site, considered sacred to both Jews and Muslims and where clashes regularly occur. Jews, for their part, refer to the area as the "Temple Mount", claiming it was the site of two Jewish temples in ancient times.

In late 2000, a visit to the site by controversial Israeli politician Ariel Sharon sparked what later became known as the "Second Intifada" - a popular uprising against the Israeli occupation in which thousands of Palestinians were killed.

Israeli military forces have once again raided the al-Aqsa Mosque compound in the Israeli-occupied Old City of al-Quds (Jerusalem) and engaged in scuffles with a group of Palestinians there.
