Some see hope of a turning point from these tragedies, that this might be the eyes-wide-open moment that moves white America from apathy or remorse to action in pursuit of racial reconciliation.

"Until I feel comfortable being able to allow my son to go out and drive, following the law, without having to feel any sense of fear about somebody racially profiling him, because he's African-American, 19 year old male, when that fear is gone then I can honestly say that things have changed".

"It's not about 'all lives matter.' It's about what lives are on the line right now", Rijo said.

"That's really incredible, to see those (non-black) people supporting us", she said. The White House said Vice President Biden also will attend the memorial service, as will former president George W. Bush, who will deliver brief remarks. The solution is to end the undervaluing of lives, both black and blue.

A report on the protests by the Democrat & Chronicle highlights the discrepancies in which the arrests were carried out according to protesters disputing the statements made by police chief Michael Ciminelli that the Rochester Police Department carried out arrests without resorting to force or the use of weapons like batons or pepper spray.

"Black Lives Matter of Cincinnati seeks to channel this anger and desire for change into a movement for unified action", said Ali Ingram, reading a policy statement from the group. "For that objective alone I think the leadership of this country needs to look a little bit harder at that particular group". He called it a "long month for America", saying the nation has seen bad and senseless things.

"It tells the community that this is not acceptable, that we will take a stand against this injustice and we know that historically movements that have mass numbers are the ones that are able to be the most effective", Harrington said.

The protests erupted initially after videos surfaced showing Sterling and Castille's fatal police encounters. Sabrina Donaldson says while she wants change, it hasn't happened yet. "If we fail to act, this will be a long, hot summer", said Rep. G.K. Butterfield, D-N.C., the caucus chairman. "Black lives matter. White lives matter".

Many white politicians, including top Democratic and Republican leaders, appealed for tolerance and unity in the aftermath of the deadly incidents.

Dubbed by organizers as "Enough is Enough: Justice for Alton Sterling, Philando Castile and Sam DuBose", the march stretched for several city blocks and paused briefly at 13th and Republic streets for marchers to place roses under a tree near where Timothy Thomas was shot and killed by police in 2001.

Black Lives Matter began in 2013 after black teenager Trayvon Martin was shot to death in Florida by one-time community watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who was later acquitted.

"However, we will not be stifled or stopped", she said. Authorities said it was the work of at least one sniper. Asian lives matter. Hispanic lives matter.
