Biles locks up spot on US Olympic gymnastics team

Four years after qualifying for the London Olympics, Conley finished third in the 5,000-meter final Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Team Track and Field Trials to clinch her spot on the American team that will travel to Rio de Janeiro next month for the 2016 Olympics.

Simone Biles is closing in on an automatic spot on the U.S. Olympic women's gymnastics team.

Those women are Simone Biles, Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Madison Kocian and Laurie Hernandez.

Lauren Hernandez competes on the floor exercise during the women's U.S. Olympic gymnastics trials in San Jose, Calif., Sunday, July 10, 2016.

Raisman will also be defending her gold medal in the floor exercise, the first American female gymnast to win gold and then qualify for the ensuing Olympics since 2000.

" Amanda Eccleston ran in the 1,500-meter race at the U.S. Olympic Trials on Sunday (July 10), finishing in fourth place, a heartbreaking result as a top-three finish would have taken her to Rio".

Douglas was seventh in the all-around, but her two-day total of 30.350 on bars was third-best at the trials behind Kocian and Locklear and her ability on other events gives Karolyi flexibility. Four years ago, the Fierce Five vaulted into history when they outscored the competition by almost five points to win their own golds.

Tori Bowie and Deajah Stevens finished first and second.

Aly Raisman may be the senior member of the team at age 22, but her previous Olympic experience is one of her strengths.

Despite not receiving high scores in her early events on Sunday night, she pulled it together and ended on a high note with a spectacular balance beam performance. Unlike the first two races, she was unable to stage a sensational kick. For example, Douglas finished fourth at the national championships two weeks ago, and Gabby herself has said that her confidence isn't quite as high as it once was.

Former University of Wyoming All-American Mason Finely won the discus at the U.S. Track and Field Trials to earn a trip to the Olympics.

Douglas blew into each hand before grabbing the wood to begin a routine that could determine her chances of reaching the Rio Games. She even admitted "I lost the joy" at one point between London and now. With Felix in mind, Olympic organizers changed the schedule to allow for the women's 2-4 double. She had a forgettable performance at the world championships last fall - failing to make an individual event final - and seemed to be in the middle of the pack as recently as March.

In the second rotation, the woman known as the "Flying Squirrel" wrapped tape tight around her wrists before leaping off a springboard to record a solid 15.250. Though hardly surprising after she won the US junior championship a year ago, Hernandez's past month of competition has been impressive as she has shown she belongs with the top gymnasts in the world.
