Firefox Containers to offer greater browsing privacy by using separate identities

Mozilla says it wants to keep working on Containers after getting feedback from Nightly users before releasing it to other versions of the browser.

"Containers also offers the user a way to compartmentalize sensitive information".

The Containers feature tries to mimic the diversity of an individual user within his or her online persona. Many people use the same computer and browser for work and personal activities, and keeping those identities and information separate is notoriously hard.

Nowadays, people are online nearly throughout the whole duration of the day in some way or the other, however at the same time it would indeed be desirable if they can browse the internet as completely different users at different times of the day and that is what one of the world's most popular web browsers, Mozilla Firefox is trying to introduce.

Firefox's new feature, called as containers, will allow users to open tabs in multiple contexts, which could mean personal, work, banking, shopping, etc. Firefox says each tab will have separate cookie management which would help separate personal and work container.

Each Container has its own cookies, cache and local storage. The user can use both mail accounts in side-by-side tabs simultaneously.

While the concept of using technology to manage multiple accounts and different personas is not a new idea, the practicalities have been out of reach.

Note that the four special Containers do not have access to site data used by normal tabs, aka default Containers. Assume a user visits attacker.com in an non-banking-container. You'll also see text and an icon in the far right of the address bar indicating what kind of container tab you have open. We only segregate data that a site has access to, not data that the user has access to.

One of the security engineer in Mozilla, Tanvi Vyas, stated in the company blog that we all perform different characteristics at different times of the day, for example, the way one speak to his son or daughter is highly varied than the way of communication with co-workers.

Firefox Nightly is available for download from Softpedia for the Linux, Mac, and Windows operating systems.

"By separating the data that a site has access to, rather than the data that a user has access to, Containers is able to offer a better experience than some of the alternatives users may be now using to manage their identities", Vyas wrote.

"Hence, fingerprinting is still a concern", Vyas said.

Each time we fire up our Web browser and read an online article or shop for something online, some record of that session is recorded and utilized to help webmasters tweak offerings for visitors. "But more sophisticated trackers can still use your fingerprint to identify your device", Vyas said. "The Containers feature is not meant to replace the Tor Browser, which tries to minimize your fingerprint as much as possible, sometimes at the expense of site functionality".
