PGA Friday: Phil Mickelson in contention with 65

Seung Yul Noh waves to the crowd after finishing the 18th hole during Thursday's play at the Fed Ex St. Jude Classic at TPC Southwind. Noh finished the day five below par

Daniel Berger overcame a three-hour rain delay to shoot a final-round three-under 67 to win his first PGA Tour title at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

The Madison resident shot a 4-under 66 Saturday and is tied for second place, three shots back of leader Daniel Berger in Memphis, Tennessee.

Berger held off the challenge of Phil Mickelson, Steve Stricker and Brooks Koepka to win by three strokes on the 13-under-par total of 267. Amazingly, Lefty is still looking for his first win on the PGA TOUR since the 2013 Open Championship. Only 11 have ever won a major after winning on tour, and Rory McIlroy was the last when he won the PGA Championship the week after taking the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational in 2014. "Making bogey and double bogey my last two holes from the middle of the fairway was not a very good finish". He's confident enough to believe that's just a matter of time, and he has put himself in position to make the FedEx St. Jude Classic his first title.

However, a double bogey followed on the next and he dropped four more shots in six holes on the front nine to drop to level par.

Daniel Berger, Rookie of the Year for the 2014-2015 season, took the crown for a series of accomplished performances that saw him finish 25th on the PGA Tour money list, but didn't have a tour title to his name until yesterday.

Berger and Brett Stegmaier, who finished T9. He is now 2nd in strokes gained putting through two rounds, which is impressive on these tough bermuda greens. He became the 13th first-time victor on tour this season and took home the winner's check of $1.1 million in the 50th start of his career.

"I feel like I am playing really well, I got a lot of confidence in my game on this golf course, I just need to go out and shoot another good score tomorrow".

"When I had that close call at the Honda 14 events into my PGA TOUR career, you start to think about that a lot", Berger said in reference to his loss previous year. "It's been a while since I've been up there and have an opportunity to win".

"You could attack", said Johnson, who shot 6-under 29 on the back nine. He had hit only three shots when the horn sounded. "I'm a competitor. I got off to a bad start and grinded it out".

Berger, a 33-1 chance ante-post for TPC Southwind glory, is three shots clear at the top of the leaderboard and a best-price 11-8 to bank the winner's cheque. Ko finished with a 67.

By the end, all those roars were left just for her.

He rolled in a 15-footer for birdie on No. 3, then birdied the par-3 No. 8 after hitting his tee shot from 167 yards to 4 feet. Five of his six birdies Friday were from inside 10 feet.

No one expects them to be the equal of Hogan, Snead and Nelson, who were all born in the same year, too, but it does bode well for golf for the next couple of decades. She bounced back with a pair of birdies down the stretch and also finished with a two-under 69.
